Step 4: Decision
After the interview, you will receive the decision from the General Inspectorate for Immigration (GII, or IGI in Romanian) which will inform you if you have received a form of protection in Romania (refugee status or subsidiary protection) or if your asylum application was rejected. The decision is based on what you said at the interview, the documents you presented and the information about your country of origin.
When will I receive a decision?
Generally, you should receive the decision in 2-3 months from the moment you applied for asylum. In some situations, it can take longer (for example the interview had to be rescheduled or you were called for a second interview in order to clarify some details).
How will I know if I received protection or not?
You will be informed of the decision in a language you understand. However, the copies of the documents you will receive will be in Romanian language. Your lawyer or NGO counselor can explain the content of the documents. The decision can also be communicated to your lawyer or the NGO which assisted you during your asylum procedure, but only if you ask for this in advance.
What will the decision say about my application?
The decision can either be positive (grant you refugee status or subsidiary protection) or negative (reject your claim for asylum. Read the following sections to learn more about each type of decision.
